From UCA Rochester to Destination Wedding Photographer in Barcelona and Spain
From UCA Rochester to Destination Wedding Photography
When I look back at my time at the University for the Creative Arts in Rochester, I can clearly see how much it shaped the photographer I am today. Studying at UCA wasn’t just about learning camera settings or editing techniques — it was about learning how to truly see.
Of course, having access to some of the best camera equipment you could imagine made those three years an absolute dream. But beyond the gear, it was the way we were encouraged to think, observe, and question that really stayed with me. At UCA Rochester, I built my foundation in visual storytelling.
We were encouraged to document the world around us with honesty and intention — a documentary mindset I still carry into every wedding I photograph. After graduating, I worked as a photojournalist for over ten years, an experience that honed my instinct for capturing real, unscripted moments. Today, I’m a destination wedding photographer based in Barcelona, bringing that same approach to couples’ most important days. While at university, I also discovered a passion for teaching photography and sharing the knowledge I had gained with others.
Learning to Tell Real Stories
University took me beyond “pretty pictures.” It taught me to look for layers — emotion, context, light, and timing — and that way of seeing is at the heart of my documentary wedding photography style today, allowing me to capture not just how your wedding looked, but how it truly felt in the quiet, fleeting moments in between.
Whether I’m photographing a multi-day Indian celebration or a relaxed coastal wedding in Spain, I’m always searching for the in-between moments: the quiet exchanges, the subtle glances, the movement, the atmosphere. The moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
From the UK to Barcelona
After graduation, my career evolved — but the core remained the same: storytelling. Now based in Barcelona and photographing destination weddings across Spain and Europe, I often think back to those early days at university — critique sessions, long editing nights on the computer or in the darkroom, and endless creative experimentation.
Being originally from the UK and now living in Spain allows me to blend both worlds. I understand British couples — their expectations, their humour, their traditions — while also working confidently within European wedding settings. That mix of cultural awareness and documentary instinct began back at UCA.
Why Alumni Stories Matter
University alumni stories often show where creative careers can lead — and wedding photography is a powerful example of that. It’s storytelling, culture, human connection, and artistry combined. Far from simply documenting a wedding day, it’s about preserving history as it happens.
From lecture rooms in Rochester to sunlit celebrations in Barcelona, the journey feels full circle. And at the heart of it all is the same principle I learned at UCA: observe honestly, document authentically, and tell the story as it truly unfolds.
