How to Plan the Perfect Surprise Proposal

Planning a surprise proposal can feel like a lot of pressure. You want the moment to be meaningful, you want your partner to be completely surprised, and if you're having a photographer there, you also need to make sure they know exactly when and where it will happen.

As a photographer who has photographed proposals, here are a few things I'd recommend when planning a surprise proposal.

Choose Somewhere Meaningful

The best location isn't necessarily the most spectacular one. Think about somewhere that means something to you both — a favourite beach, a place you visited together or simply somewhere that feels like you.

You also have to consider whether it's going to be a busy area. This can actually be quite nice, as you might get some lovely reactions from people around you. But I'd recommend finding somewhere where you don't have too many people directly behind you, as this will give your photographer a clearer view and help keep the photographs more intimate.

If you're hiring a photographer, it's also worth considering where they can discreetly position themselves without being noticed.

Plan the Moment With Your Photographer

Before the day, make sure your photographer knows exactly what you're planning. Agree on where you'll meet, roughly when the proposal will happen and, most importantly, a simple signal so they know when you're about to propose.

This means you don't have to worry about trying to find your photographer in the moment.

I also recommend asking the couple to send you a selfie beforehand, so you know exactly what they're wearing. This makes it much easier to spot them when you're waiting nearby.

Keep It Natural

One of the biggest advantages of having a photographer there is that you don't need to stop and pose during the proposal.

Your photographer can stay discreet and photograph the moment as it naturally unfolds — including the anticipation beforehand and the reaction afterwards.

And don't worry if everything doesn't go exactly to plan. Sometimes the unexpected moments make the best photographs.

Don't Forget What Happens Afterwards

Once you've proposed, give yourselves time to actually enjoy it.

The hug, the laughter, the tears, looking at the ring and calling your family are all part of the story.

After you've had a chance to take it all in, you can take a few relaxed photographs together to celebrate the moment.
