How UK Couples Can Plan a Destination Wedding in Spain

How UK couples can plan a destination wedding in Spain

Planning a destination wedding in Spain

Have you been dreaming of a destination wedding? Spain is one of the most popular choices for UK couples — and it’s easy to see why. With long sunny days, rich culture, incredible food, and breathtaking scenery, Spain offers endless possibilities for a truly unforgettable wedding day.

If you’re drawn to vibrant city celebrations, Barcelona is a fantastic choice. It’s the city I live in, and one I fell in love with instantly thanks to its architecture, history, and creative energy.  If beach views are more your style, Mallorca is hard to beat, with its stunning coastline, luxury fincas, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.

Spain offers everything from historic cities to stunning coastal escapes and peaceful countryside venues — making it the perfect destination for every kind of wedding.

It’s especially ideal for Indian weddings, with incredible venues and facilities that can beautifully accommodate multiple celebrations across several days.

If you’re a UK couple dreaming of a destination wedding in Spain, this guide will help you turn that vision into reality. And if you decide to take the next step, I’d be truly honoured to capture your day through my documentary-style wedding photography — wherever in Spain you choose to say “I do”.

Legal Requirements for British Couples

Spain is sunny most of the year, but summers can be very hot. Spring and autumn often offer perfect weather with fewer crowds. Wedding season typically runs from late spring (April/May) through autumn (September/October).

When I first moved to Spain, I quickly realised just how much paperwork can be involved — and weddings are no exception. Understanding the legal requirements early on is essential, and this is where having an experienced wedding planner can make a huge difference.

Before you get swept away creating Pinterest boards and venue wish lists, it’s important to understand the legal side of getting married in Spain.

Civil ceremonies

To have a legally recognised wedding in Spain, you’ll need to follow a strict legal process set by Spanish authorities. This includes providing documents such as birth certificates, passports, and certificates of no impediment. Requirements vary by region, so getting married in Barcelona (Catalonia) will be different from Madrid or Andalusia. It’s worth researching regional customs and regulations to see what suits you best

Religious or symbolic ceremonies

Many British couples choose to have a symbolic ceremony in Spain and complete the legal part in the UK. This option is far more flexible, involves much less paperwork, and allows you to focus fully on your wedding experience in Spain.

Wedding Time frame

In the UK, we’re used to planning fairly quickly, but Spain works at a slower pace. Legal processes can take weeks or even months, so planning well in advance will make everything far easier — and much less stressful.

Whether you choose a symbolic or legal ceremony, having a wedding photographer experienced in international weddings (like myself) means I can blend in effortlessly and capture those beautiful, meaningful moments naturally.

I’ve written a separate blog post explaining the difference between civil and symbolic wedding ceremonies.

Choosing the Best Region for Your Wedding

Barcelona

As someone who lives here, Barcelona holds a special place in my heart. With its stunning architecture, deep history, vibrant culture, and proximity to beautiful countryside and coastline, it’s ideal for couples wanting a city celebration with a cultural twist. And if you love tapas and great wine, you’ll feel right at home. They have some really beautiful wedding dress, boutiques.

Mallorca

Perfect for couples dreaming of elegance and relaxation, Mallorca is known for its luxury resorts, charming fincas, and crystal-clear beaches. It’s an ideal choice if you want a refined yet laid-back destination wedding.

Andalusia

Steeped in history and full of character, Andalusia offers whitewashed villages, orange groves, and rustic charm. It’s perfect for couples who love warmth, tradition, and dramatic landscapes.

Costa del Sol

With venues to suit almost any budget and excellent travel links from the UK, the Costa del Sol remains a popular choice for British couples wanting a classic beachside wedding.

Tenerife

Tenerife is a striking island of contrasts, where rugged volcanic terrain meets pristine beaches and lush greenery. From cliffside viewpoints to luxury seaside resorts, it provides endless options for a memorable wedding. With its warm climate, vibrant culture, and stunning natural backdrops, Tenerife is ideal for couples who want a mix of romance, adventure, and unforgettable scenery.

No matter the location you choose, my documentary wedding photography approach captures your day naturally and beautifully. Feel free to browse my wedding portfolio to see examples of my work.

Planning Your Spanish Destination Wedding from the UK

Planning a wedding abroad can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. A few smart decisions can make the whole experience enjoyable:

  1. Hire local planners or venue coordinators

They understand the local rules, timelines, and vendors — something that’s invaluable when planning from abroad.

  1. 2. Hire local planners or venue coordinators

Visiting your venue before booking is highly recommended. Yes, it means a trip to Spain — but see it as a mini holiday that gives you peace of mind.

  1. 3. Consider timing

Spain is sunny most of the year, but summers can be very hot. Spring and autumn often offer perfect weather with fewer crowds. Wedding season typically runs from late spring (April/May) through autumn (September/October).

  1. 4. Book key vendors early

Your photographer, florist, and caterer should be secured well in advance so you can relax and truly enjoy the planning process.

Tips for a Smooth, Stress-Free Wedding Day

  • Most importantly, be present. Your photographer’s job is to capture the day naturally and unobtrusively, allowing you to enjoy every moment.

  • Clear communication with your photographer is essential. I always create a structured timeline, including group photos and the best time for couple portraits.

  • You arrive in Spain a few days before the wedding to familiarise yourselves with the venue and surroundings, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
